What is Kanban? 

It is a famous framework that is used in implementing agile software development. It believes in real-time communication of capacity and keeps complete transparency of work. The work items are presented on the board in a visual way, it helps the team member to keep a track of every piece of work at any time. 

Board

The Kanban board is the agile project management tool. It is designed to keep visual track of the work, and items work-in-progress, and maximizes the flow. It also uses cards, and columns, and provides ongoing feedback to help technology and service teams who commit the work to be done in a timely manner. 

Elements of a Kanban Board

David Anderson developed the kanban board in which he divided the board into five different components. The five components are visual signals, columns, work-in-progress limits, a commitment point, and a delivery point.

Let’s discuss in detail:

  • Visual Signals: The Kanban board has visual cards i.e tickets, stickies, or otherwise. The Kanban team writes about the projects and their items into the cards. Each person has one card. For agile teams, each card could be intact with one user story. Once the board is finished, it helps the team members to understand the work quickly with the help of visual cards. 
  • Columns: In column represents the particular activities that compose a “workflow” together. The workflow is recorded into the card until it's complete. The workflow may be “To Do”, “In Progress”, “Complete”, and much more.
  • Work-in-progress(WIP) Limits: It limits the number of cards that can be placed in one column. It can be done at any one given time. It gives an alarm to the person that you are bound to complete this work. 
  • Commitment point: Kanban teams also keep track of the backlog for their board. This is where the customers and team can put their ideas related to the project so that they can pick it up. The developing team takes over the plan when they are free. It is the point where the design is taken by the team and they start working on the projects.
  • Delivery Point: It is the end point of the workflow. The delivery point of the project is when the services are handed over to the customer.
