Broadcom's acquisition of VMware will receive conditional EU approval

Lansheng Technology News: American chipmaker Broadcom's acquisition of cloud computing company VMware is about to receive conditional approval from the European Union.

In May 2022, Broadcom announced that it would acquire VMware for approximately $61 billion, one of the largest technology deals ever. Subsequently, a number of regulatory agencies around the world launched investigations, including the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union.

In April, the EU's antitrust watchdog, the European Commission, publicly opposed the deal, saying it would block it unless there were adequate remedies. Broadcom then proposed remedies in response to the EU's concerns.

The EU has until July 17 to make a final decision.

One of Broadcom's proposed remedies focuses on "Fibre Channel host bus adapters" (FC HBAs), addressing the concerns of rival Marvell Technology. In this regard, Marvell Technology has not yet commented.

Broadcom mainly supplies chips used in data center networking, as well as proprietary chips used to power artificial intelligence work. Prior to the acquisition of VMware, Broadcom had already carried out a number of large-scale mergers and acquisitions transactions, including the acquisition of semiconductor company LSI, network technology manufacturer Brocade, large software company CA and network security company Symantec's enterprise security business.
