EU approves 21 billion euro IPCEI project, beneficiaries include Infineon, Bosch and Zeiss

According to Lansheng Technology, the European Commission today officially approved the second important microelectronics project of European common interest, with 68 projects worth up to 21 billion euros in expenditure.

This follows the first ICPEI agreement in 2018, which sees the expansion of Infineon and Bosch's plants in Dresden and Austria, as well as Carl Zeiss' sub-10nm lithography optics.

The ICPEI will focus on energy-efficient technologies, from sensors and microprocessors to 5G, cars and graphene-based networking technologies. The first products will hit the market in 2025, with the aim of creating around 8,700 highly skilled direct jobs in the process.

"Green and digital transformation requires new, advanced technological solutions," said Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager. "That's why we have to increase our own chip R&D and production capabilities in Europe. We need to be the first to develop truly innovative solutions and have the first industrial deployments in Europe."

IPCEI allows countries to provide aid to companies, including STMicroelectronics and GF's joint venture factory in Crolles and Analog Devices' new factory in Ireland.

The current IPCEI was jointly formulated and notified by 14 member states including Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Spain a year ago, and they will provide 8.1 billion Euros of public funding are expected to free up another €13.7 billion in private investment.

The project will also support a wider ecosystem, supporting more than 30 related players. These include projects at universities, research institutes and companies across Europe. This wider IPCEI ecosystem brings Norway and five other member states – Belgium, Hungary, Latvia, Portugal and Slovenia – who will provide assistance under the General Block Exemption Regulation.

The IPCEI aims to promote research and development of innovative and resource-efficient technologies and components. They are chips, processors and sensors that can be integrated into a multitude of downstream applications and industries.
