Infineon announced to build the world's largest SIC factory in Malaysia

【Lansheng Technology Information】On August 4, Infineon, a major power semiconductor manufacturer, announced that it will significantly expand its Kulim Fab in Malaysia. This is in addition to the investment plan announced in February 2022. 8-inch silicon carbide power fab.

Behind this expansion plan is the commitment and support of customers, which includes around 5 billion euros in design-win cases for automotive and industrial applications, as well as an upfront payment of around 1 billion euros.

Infineon pointed out that in the next 5 years, it will invest an additional investment of up to 5 billion euros in the second phase of the construction of the third plant in Kulim. Together with the 8-inch silicon carbide conversion plans in Villach and Kulim, Austria, this investment is expected to bring Infineon an annual silicon carbide revenue potential of around EUR 7 billion by 2030. This highly competitive manufacturing base will also provide strong support for Infineon's goal of achieving a 30% market share in the silicon carbide market by 2030. Infineon predicts that the company's silicon carbide revenue in the 2025 fiscal year will exceed the target of 1 billion euros.

Jochen said that the silicon carbide market is accelerating growth, not only in the automotive field, but also in a wide range of industrial applications such as solar energy, energy storage and high-power electric vehicle charging. Through the expansion of our Kulim base, we will strengthen our leading position in this market. With industry-leading scale and unique cost advantages, we are leveraging the competitive advantage of the industry's best SiC trench technology, broadest packaging portfolio and unparalleled application understanding. These factors will be key to market differentiation and success.

Infineon highlighted that it has secured design-win cases of around 5 billion euros and upfront payments of around 1 billion euros from existing and new customers. Among them, in the automotive field, there are 6 automakers (3 of which are from China), including Ford, SAIC and Chery. In the renewable energy sector, clients include SolarEdge and 3 leading Chinese solar and energy storage system companies. In addition, Infineon and Schneider Electric have reached a capacity reservation agreement, which includes an upfront payment for silicon- and silicon-carbide-based power products. Infineon and related customers will make more detailed announcements in the near future. These advances will have a positive impact on Infineon's cash flow in the coming years and will cover the agreed sales volume no later than 2030.
