STMicroelectronics Introduces Integrated Hot-Swap and Ideal Diode Controller for Automotive Safety-Critical Applications

Lansheng Technology News June 21, STMicroelectronics announced the launch of the first automotive-compliant integrated hot-swap and ideal diode controller STPM801, suitable for functional safety applications.

The ideal diode controller drives an external MOSFET, replacing the Schottky diode traditionally used for reverse input protection and output voltage hold-up. The reduced voltage drop across the MOSFET compared to the forward voltage of the Schottky diode reduces its power consumption in normal operation. When a reverse voltage event occurs, turning off the MOSFET prevents the associated reverse-current transients in the event of a fault such as a power failure, brownout, or input short.

The ideal diode controller circuit can also provide power ORing to switch between the main battery and the backup battery to ensure uninterrupted power supply for safety-critical equipment such as autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems.

The integrated hot-swap controller drives a second external N-channel MOSFET to protect the load during a hot-swap event. The soft-start function controls the turn-on transient of the second MOSFET by charging a capacitor of known value connected to its gate with a constant current to avoid high inrush currents. The overvoltage and undervoltage pins cut off the output voltage whenever the input voltage is not within specified thresholds.

The STPM801 also includes protection and monitoring functions for applications meeting the functional safety requirements of ISO 26262 Automotive Safety Integrity Level D systems. The controller is housed in a 5mm x 5mm VFQFN-32 package, which saves PCB space and minimizes the need for external components.

Operating from a 4V-65V supply voltage with 25 μA quiescent current, the STPM801 can withstand automotive electrical hazards and minimize battery drain when the vehicle is parked. The controller can be used in zone/body ECUs, ADAS ECUs, high performance computing ECUs, infotainment ECUs, redundant power supply systems, and dual battery systems.
