Samsung Display develops MicroLED microdisplay technology for AR

【Lansheng Technology Information】Samsung Display has developed Micro LED micro-display technology for augmented reality (AR) devices. Gong Min Kim, vice president of Samsung Display and head of the technology strategy team, believes that in the near future, Micro LED will replace Micro OLED as the mainstream display screen for AR devices.

Gong Min Kim said at the conference in Seoul, South Korea that Micro OLED has limitations in brightness, size and lifespan, and cannot meet the needs of AR applications. Micro LED has the ability to overcome these problems, but the challenge is to shrink the LED as much as possible while maintaining the characteristics.

Gong Min Kim pointed out that Samsung Display is developing Micro LEDs with LED sizes smaller than 10 microns and 5 microns. So far, however, shrinking LED chips in the 20- and 10-micron range have been disappointing in both performance and feature variation.

Gong Min Kim said frankly that these LEDs are the real Micro LEDs, and TV LED chips should be classified as Mini LEDs. He believes that AR and other reality devices are close-to-eye displays that need to be designed entirely from existing display concepts for larger devices. In the past, pixels per inch were given priority for flat panels, but for microdisplays, the most important thing is "pixels per degree", that is, people with vision of 0.8-1 need 30-40ppd, and people with vision of 1.5-2.0 need 50-60ppd. The current Apple Vision Pro device uses Micro OLED technology.
