Toshiba further expands Thermoflagger™ product line – a simple solution for detecting temperature rise in electronic devices

 

 

【Lansheng Technology News】September 14, 2023 - Toshiba Electronics announced today that it will further expand the Thermoflagger™ over-temperature detection IC product line-"TCTH0xxxE series". The series can be used in simple circuits with positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistors to detect temperature increases in electronic devices. The six new products are available in volume shipments today.

 

In order for electronic devices to operate as specified, semiconductors and other electronic components must operate within design parameters. Internal temperature is a critical parameter, especially when it is higher than the temperature assumed in the design process, it can become a major issue for safety and reliability, so an over-temperature monitoring solution is needed to detect any temperature increase.

 

When configured in a simple circuit with a PTC thermistor whose resistance changes with temperature, the Thermoflagger™ over-temperature detection IC can detect not only an increase in temperature but also the resistance of a PTC thermistor placed near a heat source. The resistance changes and a FLAG signal is output when the temperature is too high. For example, when Thermoflagger™ detects an abnormal heating situation and sends a FLAG signal to the MCU, the MCU will shut down the device or change the operation of the device or semiconductor that is generating heat. By connecting PTC thermistors in series, over-temperature detection can be performed at multiple points at the same time.

 

Toshiba's six new products are: TCTH011AE, TCTH012AE, TCTH021AE, TCTH022AE, TCTH011BE and TCTH012BE. The above products, together with the already released TCTH021BE and TCTH022BE, further expand the TCTH0xxxE series product line, increasing the product line to 8 products. The new product expands the range of PTC thermistor options by providing support for two types of PTCO output currents[1], with either push-pull or open-drain FLAG signal output types[2], or With or without the FLAG signal latch function [3]. Expanding product selection enables flexible circuit design with low current consumption.

 

The new product adopts a small, industry-standard SOT–553 package (Toshiba’s package name is: ESV), ensuring that the TCTH0xxxE series allows users to easily configure over-temperature detection systems for complete sets of electronic equipment, and helps achieve dual improvements in size and power consumption.

 

In addition to the already released reference design over-temperature detection IC Thermoflagger™ application circuit (TCTH021BE/open-drain type), Toshiba has released a new version of the reference design on its official website: over-temperature detection IC Thermoflagger™ application circuit (TCTH021AE/push-pull type).

 

Toshiba uses relevant technical information on PTC thermistors provided by Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Murata") to implement over-temperature detection solutions. Murata recommends using Thermoflagger™ in conjunction with a PTC thermistor.
