What is an Agile Product Backlog?

The agile product backlog in scrum is a list of essential features of the product. It contains a small description of all the functionalities desired in the product. In the general scenario, items should be broken down into user stories. Mostly, a scrum team and its product owner write everything that they can think of for an agile product backlog.

Why is Product Backlog Important?

  • The backlog is used to give the estimation of each product feature.
  • It usually helps in planning the product’s roadmap.
  • It helps in re-ranking the features of the product by adding more value to it.
  • It assists in determining the feature priority of the product. The team member must work on the highest priority features of the product.

Characteristics of Product Backlog

Each product must have its product backlog. It can be a set of large multiple features. Different team members are allowed to work on a single product backlog. The ranking of products is completely dependent on technical value, business value, risk management, and strategic fitness. The highest priorities items are segmented into the smaller stories during the release planning. This is because they can be completed in future iterations.

The product backlog comprises a set of different types of items:

  • Features
  • Bugs
  • Technical Work
  • Knowledge acquisition
