What is the Agile Scale? | Agile Methodology Tutorial

In this article, you will learn about the agile scale.

In an agile methodology, we know there are famous frameworks - scrum and kanban. A team uses these frameworks. As the demand for agile increases, agile industries start to scale agile to suit large organizations' projects. The popular methods which are united are scrum of scrums and the scaled agile framework (SAFe). The scrum and kanban frameworks are considered the starting points for scaling agile technology in an organization.

Scrum of Scrums

It is mostly used by individual teams. They considered it an interesting and attractive method. When multiple scrum teams work together on large-scale projects, the scrum of scrums is the most used method to scale agile. The most crucial component of the scrum of scrums is a multi-team stand-up thing. It is a small meeting set up by the scrum master to explain the process of the agile methodology. One member is selected from each team for the scrum of scrums and each team has to represent their representative at the scrum of scrums, more preference is given to the person who has an understanding of technical terminology. It is an inside meeting where the scrum master facilitates the stand-ups but it is operated just like any other meeting or stand-up.

Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)

The scaled agile framework is a different form that helps in scaling the agile technology in a big-scale organization. According to Dean Leffingwell, it takes the most structured approach to scale agile than scrum of scrums. It mentions three levels in the organization: portfolio, program, and team. This framework is most suitable for larger organizations. The large area of SAFe is related to work known as themes. It maps to the business epics and architecture stories.

Managing an agile portfolio

Agile can perform large-scale projects with multiple teams and a lot of developers.

Expanding agile practice across the organization

The big organizations that work on agile projects at a large scale have three factors:

  • The entire program is iterative.
  • The organizations share knowledge and break barriers between organizations. It communicates across different projects.
  • Agile companies frequently release products across various platforms.
