Single Board Computers

Single Board Computer is a computer made on a single circuit board which contain functional computer components like microprocessor, memory, and input/output. The first single board computer is made for demonstration and educational purpose or use as embedded computer controllers.

Unlike desktop computers SBC do not depend on expansion slots for expansion as single board computers were made by increasing density of integrated circuits.

That means SBC can do all the functions of desktop computer by occupying less space and power.

Why Single Board Computers?

SBC were initially made to demonstrate working of computers and educate peoples but later on people realize that it can do much more that and this realization lead us to better optimizing of boards and increasing density if integrated circuits.

Embedded SBC are units provide computation power with no provision for plus in cards.

Factors like Small in size, less power consumption are the reasons for using SBC in machine control automation, gaming (slot machines, video poker), and kiosk.

Single Board Computers in market:

There are number of single board providers in reason being it’s wider use in industrial area and popularity but some.

If you want to know its usage just google specification of any gadget you use in your daily life you will know how it all works.

Most popular SBC providers:

  • Raspberry Pi

  • The Beagles

  • Panda Board

  • Cubie Board

  • Mars Board

  • Hackberry

  • Orange Pi

Factor effecting SBC’s:

·       Controller

·       Clock

·       Gpio

·       Dc input

·       Wi-Fi & Bluetooth

·       Ethernet

·       Operating system

·       Programming tools

·       Application size

·       Language supported

These are the factor that can differ from one board to other which define its speed and computation power.

In this tutorial we will discuss mostly about Raspberry Pi reason being most popular, cost effective and small sized board for learners.
