What is the full form of NTSE?

NTSE stands for "National Talent Search Examination".

It is a national-level scholarship program that is conducted by the government of India. This test is considered to be a badge of pride and honor since it has been conducted on a national level for years.

The test is for high school-going kids and it is conducted in 2 stages every year. The first stage is conducted among every state and union territory, so this is a state-level test, and only a handful of students are able to qualify for the second round. Then the second round is a national level test that is proceeded by the selected students only. After these two stages, there are 1000 scholarships that are awarded by the government of India.

NTSE Criteria:

There are no rigid criteria for the students to appear in the competition except for the very common grounds like the student should be a citizen of Indian irrespective if they are Indian resident or living elsewhere, must have scored a minimum of 60% marks in class 9th from the recognized alma matter and must be below the age of 18.

NTSE Reservation:

  1. 15% for students belonging to the SC category.
  2. 7.5% for students belonging to the ST category.
  3. 27% for students belonging to the OBC category.
  4. 4% for the Physically Challenged group of students, benchmark disabilities of which –

1% each will be reserved for persons with benchmark disabilities under clauses:

  • - Blindness and low vision
  • - Deaf and hard of hearing
  • - Locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims, and muscular dystrophy.
  • -1% for persons with benchmark disabilities under clauses:
  • - Autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, and mental illness.
  • - Multiple disabilities from amongst persons under clauses in the posts identified for each disability.

NTSE Benefits:

The selected students are provided with a scholarship of Rs 1250 per month for Class XI and XII and Rs 2000 per month for graduation and higher studies by the Indian government.

Other benefits are as follows:

  • NDA National Defence Academy Exam organized by UPSC gives preference to NTSE scholars.
  • Renowned Engineering College for Information Technology such as IIIT-Hyderabad offers 15 seats to NTSE scholars. This institute is considered equivalent to IIT-Bombay.
  • NTSE scholars will have the upper edge in Foreign University admissions.
  • Preference in various Public and Private sector Jobs.
  • IIT-Delhi, an Engineering College under the Government of Delhi, gives ‘bonus marks’ to NTSE scholars.
